Drivers whose cars are repaired report better claims experiences, while those with totaled vehicles report worse ones, and one in four with a loan received less than they owed.

A third year of decline
Customer satisfaction with total loss claims fell 12 points on a 1,000-point scale in 2026, which affects auto insurance customers whose vehicles are declared a total loss. [1] Satisfaction with total loss auto insurance claims has fallen for a third straight year. [1]
Total loss claim satisfaction has declined 46 points since 2023. [1]
Claims involving repairable vehicles moved the other way, with satisfaction improving four points. [1] Overall auto claims customer satisfaction was unchanged from last year at 700. [1]
Why total losses are growing
The study attributes the growing share of total losses to rising vehicle repair costs, consumers keeping vehicles longer, and higher deductibles removing smaller repairs from the claims process. [1]
Affordability pressures led some customers to drop rental coverage or increase deductibles, complicating the claims experience. [1]
Loan payoffs that fall short
Many customers are upside down on their auto loans, so the payoff in a total loss scenario can be less than what they owe. [2]
Among total loss customers with vehicle loans, 25% received payouts less than what they owed. [2]
Faster repairs help
Average repair cycle times fell to 15.3 days in the first quarter of 2026. [1] That is 10 days shorter than in the first quarter of 2024. [1]
Repair cycle times improved because claim volumes declined and repair shops have more capacity. [1]
Mark Garrett of JD Power said rates are coming down and repair cycle times have improved dramatically, so customers who can have their vehicles fixed show high satisfaction. [2]
Communication across channels
Satisfaction averaged 804 among customers who strongly agreed their insurers handled communication across channels well. [1] It averaged 390 among customers who disagreed. [1]
Insurers delivered that kind of cross-channel experience 54% of the time, one of the lowest-performing measures in the study. [1]
Problems cited for poor cross-channel experience include unclear explanations, using multiple channels to get answers, and digital tools that did not work as expected. [1]
Insurer rankings and study scope
Amica ranked highest in overall customer satisfaction with a score of 775. [1] Nationwide ranked second at 743 and Automobile Club of Southern California (AAA) ranked third at 740. [1]
The 2026 study was based on responses from 8,261 auto insurance customers who settled claims within the nine months before the survey. [1] The survey was conducted from September 2025 through August 2026. [1]
What this means for you
If your vehicle can be repaired, the data favors you, because satisfaction with claims involving repairable vehicles improved four points. [1] Repair cycle times fell to 15.3 days in the first quarter of 2026. [1]
If your vehicle is declared a total loss, satisfaction in that group fell 12 points this year. [1] If you have a loan, check what you owe, because the payoff in a total loss can be less than that amount and 25% of total loss customers with loans received less than they owed. [2]
Dropping rental coverage or raising your deductible can complicate a claim. [1] When dealing with your insurer, note that unclear explanations, multiple channels needed to get answers, and digital tools that did not work as expected were among the problems cited. [1]
