## In brief

- Paris records 1,191 harsh driving events per 1,000 trips, 5.3 times the rate in Berlin, where the figure is 225. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm)
- Berlin has the fewest harsh events. Dublin follows with 315 per 1,000 trips, then Amsterdam with 356, Rome with 393 and London with 462. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm)
- Berlin, Amsterdam, Dublin and Rome have the four highest efficiency scores and also the four lowest harsh event rates. ## A fivefold gap between capitals

Paris records 1,191 harsh driving events per 1,000 trips, 5.3 times the rate in Berlin, where the figure is 225. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm) The finding comes from Geotab's European Urban Freight Efficiency Index, which says harsh events per trip vary more than fivefold across seven European capitals. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm)

The analysis uses GPS-derived harsh acceleration, harsh braking and harsh cornering events from more than 130 million trips by Geotab-connected vehicles in 2025. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm)

## The rates city by city

Berlin has the fewest harsh events. Dublin follows with 315 per 1,000 trips, then Amsterdam with 356, Rome with 393 and London with 462. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm)

Madrid, at 1,088, and Paris, at 1,191, sit far above the other cities. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm) Berlin's gap with Madrid is 4.8 times. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm)

In absolute terms, London recorded 31.4 million harsh events in 2025, the second-highest number of the seven cities, behind Madrid's 32.1 million. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm)

## How rates line up with efficiency scores

Berlin, Amsterdam, Dublin and Rome have the four highest efficiency scores and also the four lowest harsh event rates. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm) Paris, London and Madrid are the three lowest-scoring cities and have the three highest rates. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm)

Madrid is the lowest-ranked city on efficiency, with a score of 25. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm) London ranks sixth of seven with a score of 29. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm) Paris ranks fifth with a score of 37, so its safety result is weaker than its efficiency score alone would predict. [[2]](https://www.carriermanagement.com/news/2026/11/06/293294.htm)

Rome ranks fourth on efficiency despite having the worst congestion score in the study. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm)

## What sits behind the numbers

Harsh acceleration accounts for 79% of Paris events and 69% of Madrid events, while Berlin and London split more evenly between acceleration and braking. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm) Paris has the most acceleration-heavy profile in the study, at 79% acceleration, 15% braking and 6.5% cornering. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm) Madrid's mix is 69% acceleration, 19% braking and 12% cornering. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm)

Berlin's mix is 45% acceleration, 44% braking and 10% cornering, which Geotab says likely reflects the city's wide, straight boulevards. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm) London's mix is 45.5% acceleration, 38.7% braking and 15.8% cornering. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm)

Amsterdam and Rome have the highest share of harsh cornering of any city, at 34% and 27%, while harsh braking is the largest event type in both, at 37% and 40%. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm) Amsterdam's full mix is 29% acceleration, 37% braking and 34% cornering. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm)

## Hotspots and timing

Amsterdam's busiest area, on the A4 approach to Schiphol airport, alone holds 6.3% of the city's harsh events, more than double the top area in any other city. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm) Its three busiest areas hold 13.7% of the city's harsh events, the most concentrated pattern in the study. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm)

All three of Dublin's busiest areas sit on the Naas Road (N7), with shares of 2.3%, 1.9% and 1.4% of Dublin's harsh events. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm) Berlin's busiest areas, around Spandauer Damm in Charlottenburg, in Spandau and in Westend, each hold about 2% of events. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm)

Paris's busiest area is in the 18th arrondissement near the Porte de la Chapelle interchange, holding 1.8% of events. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm)

Paris events peak at 19:00, later than in any other city. [[2]](https://www.carriermanagement.com/news/2026/11/06/293294.htm) Madrid's peak at 11:00, and the city still logs 886,000 events at 05:00, its quietest hour. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm)

## What the event mix means for fleets and insurers

If you cover or run vehicles in Paris or Madrid, the exposure is the highest in the study, at 1,191 and 1,088 harsh events per 1,000 trips. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm) Both cities lean on acceleration, at 79% and 69% of events. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm)

Geotab states that an acceleration-heavy profile tends to respond to driver coaching and in-cab feedback, while a profile built on braking and cornering more often points to junction design and routing. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm)

Amsterdam and Rome fall into the second group, since braking is their largest event type and they have the highest cornering shares. [[1]](https://www.finanznachrichten.de/nachrichten-2026-11/70043326-geotab-inc-paris-records-5-3-times-more-harsh-driving-events-per-trip-than-berlin-geotab-data-reveals-008.htm) London's total matters as well, with 31.4 million events in 2025.
